Kinja'd!!!

I’m wondering if anyone here on oppo has ever had a bone replaced. I might have to myself in the future, so I’m gathering data and first/second-hand experience.

So long story short, I shattered part of my humerus (shoulder) bone about 10+ years ago. I’m still living with the effects and pain to this day. I’m pretty sure that one day I’ll have to have it replaced with a metal ball. What I’m wondering is, what is it like to get it replaced? Any pros and cons? Etc?

Back when I damaged it, in my sophomore year of high school, the doctor wanted to replace it back then but I was still growing, so it was a no go. He suggested that I do it when I was 30. Well, I’ll be 30 next year. The pain isn’t severe, yet, so there’s no reason to just replace it right now. But I still have the pain occasionally.

I guess you can say, I’d like to at least know what might be in store for me if I do eventually get it replaced.

Thanks.

P.S. : if you think you can make the jump on your bmx bike, reassess the situation. And if you MUST make the jump, make sure you have someone who can take you to the hospital asap. Don’t pull a Mr. ZTP and make that sweet, awesome jump when both parents are two hours away, and you have to bug a neighbor to take you to the closest hospital. And your mother will NOT be happy, but that's a given.

If you go for a carbon-fiber upgrade, will you be off-balance?

The logical thing would be do both sides at the same time for maximum performance

Hopefully not. I’d probably shave off 10 lbs that way. Simplify and add lightness, right?

Have you ever had difficulties with it? Or have you never noticed a difference? One concern is that the body might fight against it because it's a foreign object.

Need gone now!

Low-mileage male humerus. Salvage title.

Turned when parked.

No low-ballers or shoulder-kickers.

i think for me its a little different. where yours would be replacing an existing item, mine is adjacent to it so it competes for space with muscles. It does get sore occasionally because of that. The weather also will make it sore.

Yeah, but any info is good, I believe. With metal the cold would affect it. I’m guessing like feeling a chill or something?

The cold already makes my shoulder sore, but I've adapted to it. I adapted to a lot of the pain, where k is its an annoyance more than anything. I do feel that getting it replaced would put me back to square one honestly.

no chill just sore. I think its the change in atmospheric pressure or something.

I have a similar situation with my left wrist. had a double compound fracture of my forearm and almost complete detonation of every bone in my wrist (motorcycle accident). the x-rays looked like someone had drawn an outline of a hand an thrown a handful or two of pea-gravel over it.

I have two permanent titanium reinforcement bars and 53 screws in my left forarm/wrist. It gets achy sometimes, but range of motion is nearly as good as my uninjured hand. It took a couple years for the strength to come back, but unless it’s achy from the weather I can’t even tell a difference any more.

P.S. Props to Dr. Huber at Mansfield Orthopedics in Morrisville, VT for spending nearly 7-hours in surgery piecing the little bits back together!

Not a replacement, but serious bone/joint surgery:

That’s awesome you got you hand back though! I didn’t mention it above, but ever since the injury I’ve loss some range of motion and quite a bit of strength. I can’t lift heavy things nor can I apply a lot of pressure to something.

It’s good to know that you can’t feel the difference. I can’t help but wonder if I’ll regain my strength if I do get it replaced. Hmmm...

If the pain subsides, and you use it, you should get the strength back. I was worried about my wrist and arm holding together for the first couple years, but the pain was completely gone by 6 months post surgery, and once I got over the fear of breaking it and started doing weights and normal activities again without worying about it the strength returned pretty quickly.

I did weight training after the injury, but ever since HS I haven’t. When I did weight train, my biggest hurdle was the benchpress, and getting the weights off the bar. I struggled with that, but if I had assistance for the initial part, I would be fine.

Not sure if it had anything to do with it, but the injury was in the area where a tendon/ ligament was.

yeah, that can make a difference. I was SUPER lucky, in that mine was entirely a compression injury, basically my arm was driven straight on to be about 4" shorter than normal (with all the associated bone destruction), meaning the tendons were NOT ripped off the bones.

It was pretty surreal. My left forearm arm had an s-bend in it between the elbow and wrist (with bits of bone sticking out of both outside edges) and my hand was all disjointed. I stoop up after the crash, looked over at my left arm, and the pain hadn’t hit yet and I just said to myself “oh, thats not good.”

Then I sat down and had a cigarette while I waited for the ambulance to come and the 95 year-old man in the Mercedies SL450 who had hit me to figure out where he was and what had just happened.

In hindsight, I was lucky too. Despite being 12 years ago, I still vividly remember the what happened. The part I’m confused about is how I hit my shoulder. I should of hit my jaw, which would of snapped my neck. But for some reason, I rotated to my right shoulder. I’ve replayed the scenario in my head many times, I should of damaged my neck. Divine intervention of you ask me...

Now I just have a reminder of what not to do....I'm still confident I can make the jump, :p.

My limited experience (wife used to work physical rehab at a hospital) suggests that as young as you are, you should have a pretty good experience. But I imagine the recovery will be something out of this world. I'd be interested to see how this shakes out for you.

No advice or info to offer as the worst injury I’ve ever had was a fractured rib from falling downa flight of stairs (which was surprisingly painful....could barely twist, lift or move my upper body without it hurting like a bitch....and not even sharp pain, just weird dull pain that took your breath away, and it wasn’t even broken! Then again, the rest of you commenting on this post have been through much worse, so what do I know, haha!)

That all being said.

That 126 is awesome. :D

Ha, I’ve become used to most of it. I usually remember what triggers the pain, so I avoid it the best I can.

And yes, the 126 is awesome. Not too many good pics online of it though.

Eh, I’m a complainer when it comes to pain, but I can get through it. I just find the pain to be an annoyance more than painful , :).

Lucky. The other day I was thinking I had the most injuries when compared to my siblings.
